Next Stop: Imagination
This mural explores past, present and future journeys taken by bus from Spennymoor, developed in collaboration with pupils from King Street Primary School and members of the art group at Spennymoor Youth and Community Association.
With the school, we imagined what might have been seen through the bus window in the past, what we see today, and what we hope to see in the future. Children drew changing landscapes, growing greenery and brighter possibilities. With the community group, we shared memories sparked by questions written on bus tickets, talking about what happened both outside the bus and inside it; the conversations, daydreams, waiting, watching and travelling together.
The finished artwork brings these stories together in a joyful, imaginative world. Trees and flowers grow in many different styles, reflecting the many hands and voices that shaped the work. The mural is an imagined stage, powered by solar and lunar energy, where future journeys unfold. Islands float capturing those little moments, connected by giant flower bus stops, inviting us to travel by foot, boat, swimming or bus and to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
